Curriculum

Marnel Whole School Curriculum Intent

At Marnel Junior School, we have designed an ambitious, broad and carefully sequenced curriculum that reflects the needs, interests and experiences of our pupils.

Our curriculum goes beyond the requirements of the National Curriculum and is designed to ensure that all children develop the knowledge, skills and understanding needed to succeed academically and personally.

Knowledge is deliberately sequenced so that learning builds progressively from Year 3 to Year 6. We want pupils to make meaningful connections across their learning, develop secure understanding over time and leave Marnel with a rich body of knowledge about the world around them.

Communication is central to our curriculum. We aim to develop confident readers, writers, speakers and thinkers who can articulate their ideas effectively, engage positively with others and communicate with increasing confidence across a range of contexts. Through disciplinary reading, rich vocabulary instruction and purposeful oracy opportunities, pupils learn how experts think, communicate and work within different subjects.

Through meaningful experiences, high expectations and rich opportunities for learning, pupils develop curiosity, resilience and a lifelong love of learning. We want children to understand the world around them, think critically about important issues and recognise the impact they can have within their local, national and global communities.

We are committed to providing an inclusive curriculum that celebrates diversity, promotes equality and raises aspirations. Through careers education, the BET Guarantee, technology, enrichment opportunities and pupil leadership experiences, children develop the confidence, character and ambition needed to thrive in an ever-changing world.

Every child is recognised as a unique individual. We celebrate and value differences within our school community and provide an environment where all pupils feel represented, respected and supported to achieve their potential. Through carefully planned support, challenge and inclusive practice, every child is encouraged to succeed and flourish.

We intend our children to leave Marnel as aspirational, knowledgeable and well-rounded young people who are prepared for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of the next stage of their education and beyond.

Curriculum Implementation

Our bespoke curriculum is carefully planned and delivered to ensure clear progression in both knowledge and skills from Year 3 to Year 6. Subject progression documents support teachers in sequencing learning effectively so that pupils build upon prior knowledge and develop deeper understanding over time.

Rosenshine's Principles of Instruction underpin teaching and learning across the school. Prior learning is regularly revisited, new learning is carefully modelled and pupils are given opportunities to practise, apply and refine their understanding independently. Learning is broken down into manageable steps whilst maintaining high expectations for all pupils.

Rosenshine

Communication is a golden thread throughout the curriculum.

Reading, vocabulary development, disciplinary reading, discussion and oracy are embedded across subjects to support understanding, develop language and strengthen long-term retention. Pupils are encouraged to explain, justify, debate and present their thinking across the curriculum.

We value active, immersive learning experiences and provide opportunities for children to investigate, create, collaborate and think critically. Educational visits, enrichment opportunities, OPAL play, performances, leadership roles and wider curriculum experiences enable pupils to apply their learning in meaningful and memorable contexts.

Adaptive teaching ensures that all pupils can access the curriculum and experience success. Teachers carefully scaffold learning, provide appropriate challenge and use targeted support where needed to enable every child to make progress from their starting points.

Reading is prioritised at Marnel. Through explicit teaching, high-quality texts and a range of opportunities to read across the curriculum, pupils develop both competence and a genuine enjoyment of reading. Mathematics is taught through a mastery approach, developing conceptual understanding, reasoning and problem-solving skills.

Technology is used purposefully to enhance teaching and learning, develop digital literacy and prepare pupils for an increasingly digital world. Pupils learn to use technology responsibly, creatively and effectively as a tool for communication, collaboration and learning.

Where appropriate, reading and writing are embedded across the wider curriculum, providing purposeful contexts for learning whilst maintaining the integrity of individual subjects.

Parents are active partners in the curriculum and are supported to engage with children's learning through curriculum information, celebrations of learning and wider school events.

Curriculum Impact

Through our curriculum, pupils develop the knowledge, skills and understanding needed to become successful learners and responsible citizens. They experience a broad and balanced curriculum which enables them to take pride in their achievements, reflect on their progress and develop confidence in their abilities.

Our pupils develop the behaviours and habits of effective learners. They demonstrate resilience, perseverance and reflectiveness, understanding that learning often involves challenge and that mistakes provide opportunities for growth.

Children become confident communicators who can think critically, solve problems, work collaboratively and apply their learning in a range of contexts. They can draw upon prior learning, make connections across subjects and communicate their ideas clearly using increasingly sophisticated vocabulary.

Pupils understand the importance of equality, diversity and inclusion. They show tolerance, empathy and respect for others, embrace difference and contribute positively to their school and wider community.

The impact of our curriculum is also seen in pupils' digital fluency, creative thinking and ability to use technology responsibly to support their learning. They develop leadership skills and contribute meaningfully to initiatives that promote inclusion, sustainability, community engagement and social responsibility.

Ultimately, children leave Marnel Junior School with strong academic foundations, a love of learning and the confidence, values and aspirations needed to flourish in secondary school and beyond. They are well-rounded, compassionate and ambitious young people who are prepared to face challenges and seize opportunities in an ever-changing world.
