Transition information

Transition  from year 2 to year 3

Transition from Infant to Junior School

Our approach to transition ensures that every child moving from Year 2 into Year 3 experiences a smooth, confident, and well-supported start to their Junior School journey. We recognise that this is a significant milestone, and our transition process is carefully designed to support pupils academically, socially, and emotionally, while maintaining a strong focus on safeguarding and individual needs.

At the heart of our transition is a child-centred and inclusive ethos. We take time to understand each pupil as a learner and as an individual, ensuring that their strengths, interests, and any additional needs are recognised and supported from the outset. Early and purposeful information sharing between Infant and Junior staff enables continuity in teaching approaches, curriculum planning, and pastoral care.

Strong communication between Marnel Infant school and other infant settings underpins the process. Staff work collaboratively through meetings, visits, and shared documentation to ensure that key information—including attainment data, learning behaviours, and wellbeing considerations—is accurately transferred. Particular care is taken to ensure clear safeguarding procedures and SEND continuity, so that support systems remain consistent and effective.

We also place great importance on building relationships. Pupils are given opportunities to become familiar with their new environment, staff, and routines, helping to reduce anxiety and build confidence. Equally, we foster open and transparent communication with parents, keeping them informed and involved at every stage. This partnership ensures that families feel reassured and supported throughout the transition.

By embedding these principles, we aim to create a seamless progression that enables every child to feel safe, valued, and ready to thrive in the next stage of their education.

Transition to Secondary School

At Marnel Junior School, we place great importance on preparing our pupils for a confident and successful move to secondary education. We are proud of our strong and well-established links with Everest Community Academy, our local secondary school within the Bourne Education Trust, and a key destination for many of our pupils.

Transition is a carefully planned and collaborative process. Our Year 6 team works closely with secondary colleagues, including Heads of Year 7, to share detailed information about pupils’ academic progress, learning needs, and wellbeing. This ensures continuity, strong pastoral care, and a smooth start for every child.

While we have a particularly close partnership with Everest Community Academy, we also provide extensive transition support for all secondary schools that our pupils move on to. We recognise that our children transfer to a range of schools across the Basingstoke area, and we are committed to ensuring every child feels equally prepared and supported, regardless of their destination.

These schools include:

  • Everest Community Academy
  • Brighton Hill Community School
  • Cranbourne Business and Enterprise College
  • Bishop Challoner Catholic Secondary School
  • The Costello School
  • The Hurst School (Tadley)
  • Testbourne Community School (Whitchurch)

We work proactively with all receiving schools, sharing information, supporting communication, and ensuring that individual needs—particularly for pupils with SEND—are fully understood and planned for.

Pupils benefit from a wide range of transition opportunities. Year 6 children attend dedicated transition days at their secondary schools, giving them first-hand experience of lessons, routines, and new environments. Secondary staff also visit Marnel, working with pupils and building early relationships that help to reduce anxiety and build confidence.

In addition, Year 5 pupils are invited to attend engaging taster days, often at Everest Community Academy, where they take part in exciting specialist lessons such as Art, PE, and ICT—providing an early glimpse into secondary school life and raising aspirations.

For pupils with SEND, enhanced transition arrangements include additional visits, tailored support, and close liaison between staff to ensure every child feels secure and ready for the move.

Through these strong partnerships and carefully planned experiences, we ensure that all pupils leave Marnel Junior School as confident, well-prepared learners—ready to embrace the opportunities and challenges of secondary school life.
