Safeguarding

Here at Marnel Junior School safeguarding responsibilities are of the up most importance to us.

All staff have undergone the relevant checks to enable them to work around children. We also provide regular safeguarding and 'top up' training sessions, to ensure we are reporting, recording, and sharing safeguarding concerns appropriately. As a school we work closely with Basingstoke Children Services Department and Early Help Hub. We are regularly updating guidance, policy and procedures in accordance with Hampshire County Council and the Hampshire Safeguarding Childrens Partnership.

We have a duty of care to report any safeguarding concerns and share this information with certain individuals and outside agencies where relevant. Within school we currently have four members of staff trained as Designated Safeguarding Leads. One or more of these adults will always be available to staff, parents, and pupils.

As in all schools, if there are concerns about a member of staff these are reported to the Headteacher. If concerns are raised regarding the conduct of the Headteacher that these are shared with our Chair of Governors, Steve Matthews. Our staff 'Whistleblowing Policy' has been a discussed with all staff and is readily available for all to read.

NSPCC

We regularly engage with the NSPCC Speak Out Stay Safe sessions for the children. Their trained volunteers worked with the children through interactive sessions and assemblies. The purpose of their work is to equip the children with the knowledge and understanding that they need to stay safe from abuse and neglect. The children were taught to speak out if they are worried, to either a trusted adult or Child line.

All the children engaged really well in the child-friendly and engaging workshops. With the help of Buddy the speech bubble children were left empowered to speak out if needed. We really hope they took a lot away from the sessions and can carry these skills through the rest of the childhood and into their adult years.
