Life Skills feeds through the design of our entire curriculum

Intent

Our pupils leave us with a strong sense of moral and practical grounding ready to succeed in diverse, complex society. Our pupils are aspirational and hold the attitude that they can be anything which they want to be in life. We provide them with a vast experiences which enrich their lives and provide them with constant bursts of cultural capital. 

Our curriculum aims to teach children the following life skills:

Grow throughout life by learning and reflecting on yourself, your background and your strengths

Explore the full range of possibilities open to you and learn about recruitment processes and the culture of different workplaces

Manage your career actively, make the most of opportunities and learn from setbacks

Create opportunities by being proactive and building relationships with others

Balance your life as a worker and/or entrepreneur with your wellbeing, other interests and your involvement with your family and community

See the big picture by paying attention to how the economy, politics and society connect with your own life and career

Implementation

Our curriculum is designed in such as way that life skills are carefully threaded through to create a unique yet subtle context where children thrive and learn to be safe, confident, respectful, inclusive and believe in fundermental British values.

Lifeskills such as keeping safe on and offline play a heaviy feature in both our PSHE and computing curriculum. Our PSHE currcuilum which is driven through the Jigsaw scheme covers a range of areas to teach children how to cope and be resilient in modern society. Through assemblies and our learning behaviour lessons children learn to be tolerant, resilient, respectful, open-minded, reflective and how these compliment fundermental British values.

Children have an opportunity to take on responsibilies beyond the classroom and learn how to excell within roles, for instance children can become school councillors, eco warriers, Opal play leaders, or librarians. 

Beginning on the Opal play journey has also meant that the children can be more exploratory, resilient, co-operative and imaginate during play times.

Our wide range of extra curricular clubs also provide children with the opportunity to become skilled at sports, gardening, cooking, chess and the arts. 

Cooking is carried out by all year groups as part of the D.T curriculum and children are taught the importance of healthy eating and hyginene through PHSE.

Impact

Marnel is a stimulating, caring and inclusive environment in which each child will be successful at managing and regulating their emotions, have a good self-worth and have aspirationsal life long goals. At the heart of this message is the care and support given to children of all abilities, in order for them to achieve their potential in learning and apply this to the wider world.
